Volks-Fair 2018

I was able attend this years Volks-Fair in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. It is on the grounds of Hebert's Candies. Unfortunately my Bug didn't make as it's not quite ready for the long trip just yet. Up to the day of it had been predicting thunderstorms but the weather held out but was still somewhat hot and humid. I thought I'd share some photos of many of fine VW's that showed up.

It was nice seeing more VW Thing's than last year.

Actual Herbie from "Herbie: Fully Loaded" movie starring Lindsey Lohan.

The exhaust tip was a nice touch.

A nice 54 Oval I had followed to the show(It was being towed by another VW).

You don't see too many of these stock never mind customized.

True.

Classy light green.

Love the exhaust.

Drive safely.

This wasn't even in the show itself. It should have been though.

This was towing the 54 Oval I noted in another picture. It's rare to see these in a later model year.

Classic lines and stance.

Lot's of swag on this Super Beetle soft top.

It was a great show. I'm already looking forward to next year's show.  Thanks to The Bug Club for putting on the show and Hebert's Candies for hosting it once again.

Bug Repair Lesson #1 - Replacement Parts are not created equal

One of the first lessons I learned about working on an old Beetle is that although replacemnt parts my be plentiful the quality of them isn't always equal. I can see why NOS(New Old Stock) or parts from comparable vehicle are more desirable. One example of this was tail light lenses on my 74 Bug.

The driver's side tail light lens was cracked and needed replacement. So i went to my computer and started searching online. I found some that were inexpensive. They were less than $20 so I bought one and anxiously awaited delivery.

New on the left and original on the right.

When it arrived I was happy see shiny new tail light. I took off the old one and compared them. From a distance they may look the same but up close you can see some minor differences. One is the lens inside grid pattern on the orange turn signal part is different. It's still functional and only VW enthusiasts may even notice the difference.

Secondly the border between red and the clear back up lens is different. You might think like the previous difference will only be noticed by VW enthusiasts with a sharp eye but this does make a difference when in use, particularity at night. During the day it doesn't make much difference function wise but at night the red light illuminates the back up light.

Replacement light on left and original on the right.

A third difference is what's inside. The internals of these are slightly different. I believe because the manufacturer was trying to make a product to fit multiple years of VW's they won't always fit a particular year perfectly. You can obviously see a difference between the metal spacers. Not surprisingly mine needed some customizing. I needed to snip the little one inch tabs on the spacer between the red and the clear.

Don't forget the gasket!

On a side note don't forget, like I did, to order a gasket that goes between the lens and the light housing. It's inexpensive and they give you enough to do two lights. You just have to cut it to size and install it. They are important as it keeps moisture from getting inside.

Only those with sharp eyes will notice the difference.

Overall the new taillight is installed and works fine even with these flaws. Like I said most likely only hardcore Beetle enthusiasts will notice the difference. I can now see why people pay more for original used parts or NOS than a cheaper replacement. I'll probably replace it with one that matches eventually. I just wanted to share this as a quick lesson learned for newbie Bug owners like myself. Cheaper replacements are fine for the quick fix but for better quality one should probably look for NOS or original used parts. Thanks for stopping by and feel free to ask questions or comment. I hope you'll come back again soon.

Keep on Buggin'

Last years Bug show at Volks-Fair 2017

Soon after buying my Bug I of course had to check out Volks-Fair 2017 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts hosted by Heberts Candies. My Bug still wasn't up to the hour ride yet but it didn't stop be from going up there. I thought I'd share some photos from then. My apologies for belated post. Enjoy the pictures.

Back from Vacation

I recently came back from vacation. My girlfriend and I took a long drive from Massachusetts to Northern Virginia. to visit an old high school friend we hadn't seen in decades. Coincidently it was also the first major heatwave to hit the region. Despite this we visited a bunch historic sites and caught up with our classmate.

Of course this tore me away from my beloved Bug who has been starving for attention. I did miss it and took it out for a short drive when I finally came home. I sense it missed me as much as I missed her. Even in a short drive around the neighborhood manages bring a smile to my face. I'm sure the Bug would smile too if it could.

My goal in the next coming weeks is to finish patching a couple of rust holes and troubleshooting the horn and fuel gauge and finally go for that illusive state inspection sticker. My timeline is to get it by August 19 so I can bring it to a local VW show in nearby Cumberland, Rhode Island called VW's on the Hill. I went to it last year but the Bug wasn't ready. It gives me a goal to shoot for.

Drive safe out there.
